ESPN and CANAL + Events will collaborate to host and televise the third iteration of Winter X Games Tignes from March 14-16 at Tignes Ski and Snowboard resort in the French Alps. Winter X Games Tignes 2012 will welcome 150 world-class athletes competing in Snowboard and Skiing events. There will be eight different competitions for men and women over three days, including Ski SuperPipe, Snowboard SuperPipe, Ski Slopestyle, Snowboard Slopestyle as well as Snowmobile demonstrations. Winter X Games Tignes will bring together ESPN's world class X Games franchise with France's leading pay TV broadcaster and the local expertise of Tignes Resort.
In the US, the Winter X Games are an institution, seen by top sportsmen and women as the big one, the high point of the season. It's a colossal event, with some 54 million television viewers tuning in last year to watch a spellbinding show, broadcast in over 140 countries, from Israel to Australia, and from Africa to Asia. The annual Winter X Games is the premier winter action sports event in the world, featuring athletes from across the globe competing in three sports: Ski, Snowboard and Snowmobile. All Winter X Games competitions take place in Aspen-Snowmass, Colorado (USA), at the resort’s Buttermilk Mountain.Winter X Games Europe is a joint venture between ESPN and CANAL+. ESPN launched the first Winter X Games in 1997, two years after creating X Games in Rhode Island. Now, 15 years later, the winter event that united an entire generation is leaving American shores for the first time and choosing as its French partner and general coordinator of the new event, CANAL+ Events, to launch the Winter X Games Europe. CANAL+ Events, the CANAL+ Group's sports marketing and events subsidiary, and ESPN have set themselves the target of ensuring the European edition is as big as its American equivalent within three years.
